{November 14, 2006}   ghost hunting

A few weeks ago I went ghost hunting in the Library’s Julia Ideson Building. This was part of a Houston Chronicle story about the reported ghost in the building. The ensuing story ran on the cover of the newspaper on Halloween:

Shhh … at Ideson Library, you just might hear Mr. Cramer’s violin. But know this: He died in 1936.
Truth stranger than fiction?

Thus it was on a wet, starless night, that library spokeswoman Sandra Fernandez, her colleague Dan Castillo and two intrepid representatives of the Fourth Estate, prowled the shadowed corridors of the venerable library daring something untoward to happen.

Wait.

Was that chinking noise the tuning of a violin’s strings?

Naw, it was only contracting of the air conditioner’s pipes.

As the night ticks toward morning, Fernandez observes: “We’re pretty much alone in the building.” Time to while away the hours telling ghost stories.

Fernandez tells of how her relatives in Mexico saw a spectral someone cross the street from one abandoned, boarded-up house to another.

It was a unique experience.
