I’ve been having fun loading and tagging photos onto Geni.com. I created a family tree about a year ago and let it sit there for months without updating or adding. It wasn’t until earlier this year that I started inviting family members to join. And then the fun began. Aunts and cousins, all girls, started filling in birthdates and adding photos. Now I have email addresses and info on family members I hadn’t seen in forever.

The thing that makes this so much better is that all my siblings and I took a trip to Detroit recently for a wedding that served as a family reunion. I can put names and faces and voices and conversations and memories to the family tree.

To friends and family who have been trying, sometimes successfully and sometimes unsuccessfully, to get in touch with us: we are fine.

The houses suffered some minor damage. No one has power. We have water. We have been lucky enough to find gas for our cars when needed, supplies to eat and drink and keep well, and have had relative comfort (all things considered).

Special thanx to family members who housed us in North Houston during the worst of the hurricane.

We will post updates as available. I am back at work, so I have Internet access during the day.

For those of you who don’t know, I am going to Detroit next weekend. I will be there for a week for a family wedding.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone. I haven’t been there in a few years. Probably won’t recognize anyone.

Going to Detroit in August for a family wedding. I can’t remember the last time I was in that city.

Looking forward to seeing family, meeting new family members and getting caught up.

Until then, I’m probably going to continue this quite streak. Too busy at work to blog effectively.

After Dylan’s recent stay in the hospital, this week’s news that Staph infections kill more people than AIDS is scary.

U.S. deaths from staph surpass AIDS
Study shows majority of cases of drug-resistant infection originate in health settings

About 18,700 people die in this country each year from drug-resistant staph infections, according to a federal study released Tuesday — more deaths than the United States sees from AIDS annually.

The study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, scheduled to be published in today’s edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, is the first of its kind to track methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, known as MRSA.

Based on data from 2005, the agency estimated that about 94,400 patients nationwide suffer an invasive MRSA infection each year. And in the vast majority of cases, the infections originated in health care settings.

It’s official. Saul got his new orders and will be staying in Iraq at least another 7 months. We’re expecting it to be a year more.

Ashlee is at orientation today for junior high. Junior high. Wasn’t she just a baby?

I’m turning into one of those people who’s amazed that she’s getting older. Having a niece who’s five feet tall and with a very well-developed smart mouth isn’t helping.

proof that I love my brother

I had to drain and refill his fish tank. This required manual work, time and effort.

It’s done.

I told him, before he left, that I was just going to add salt to the water while he was away. So far, that hasn’t happened.

Let’s see if the fish survive when it’s just me.

Anyway, if taking care of his fish isn’t proof of love, nothing is.

I can’t believe it’s been six months already. Doesn’t he look cute?

He had his six-month checkup yesterday: 27 1/2 inches, 21 1/2 pounds.
